Original WW2 German Army Long Handled Shovel for Field Engineers and Vehicles (Wehrmacht Langstielige Schaufel für Pionieren und Fahrzeuge) in steel, with a wooden handle. This is a standard pattern used throughout both World Wars. They were often attached to the side of vehicles, but there was also leather cover for the blade, when it was carried. I do not have the cover. On the blade is a maker's logo A Lion with a shovel!Over 1939 , the year of manufacture. The shovel is in good usable condition. The blade was originally painted black, but less than 20% of the paint remains, mainly around the top areas. Most of the metal has surface rust, but metal is still strong, with no deeper rust spots. Handle is made of an unknown hard wood, and is undamaged (see photographs).
Overall shovel is in good condition. The blade is 220 mm (8.66 in) wide and 230 mm (9.06 in) long. The handle extends a further 880 mm (34.65 in) past the blade. Shovel weighs about 1.5 kg (52.91 oz).
