GERMAN WW2 EKM Erkennungsmarke Veter. This is a German World War II-era personal identification tag (Erkennungsmarke) belonging to a soldier from a Wehrmacht veterinary unit.
This unit-part of the 299th Infantry Division's organic support elements (Divisionseinheiten 299)-belonged to the 299th Infantry Division, which was formed in Erfurt in February 1940. The division saw active combat on the Eastern Front (as part of Army Groups South and Centre) and was ultimately destroyed in the spring of 1945 in the Heiligenbeil Pocket in East Prussia. Such veterinary companies were responsible for the care, treatment, and evacuation of horses, which formed the backbone of the horse-drawn transport and supply systems for German infantry divisions. The tag itself features the standard oval shape, with a central break line and holes for a cord. The upper and lower sections duplicate the information: in the event of a soldier's death, one half would be snapped off for reporting to headquarters, while the other remained with the body for subsequent identification.
Don't miss out on this rare EKM Dog Tag - 299 Inf. Veterinary Company that will be an excellent addition to any collection. No return from Canada and United States.
