ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING MENKE GERMAN NAZI rank MAJOR Protection POLICE 1944 WWII AS PICTURED. 1 The German Police of the 3d Reich displayed their national emblem on the sleeve as he does. They principally used two colors of piping - lime-green (Protection Police [Schutzpolizei]), and orange (Rural or Civil Police [Ordnungspolizei]). 2 The German Army Panzer arm (as all other German Army soldiers) wore their national emblem on their right breast.

It was different than the Police eagle as it had no wreath around it and was more squat, with longer wings. The piping for the Panzer force was rose-pink. 3 A Colonel has shoulder boards with intertwined "plaiting" like your officer, but, they wore two gold square looking pips on each. Major is a plain board, Lieutenant Colonel has one pip, and Colonel has two.

They would be positioned in line, one at the shoulder head seam and the other just before the button hole. The next rank up would be General Major. No pips, but the plaiting is gold and silver strands intertwined. 4 His medals are basic for a Police officer and reflect what he may have been involved in. The ribbon in his button hole is for the War Service Cross 2nd Class (Kriegsverdienst Kreuz [KVK]).

The medal on his pocket is for the KVK 1st Class with Swords. Every grade of the KVK came with or without swords, swords being reserved for actions against an enemy. Because his has swords he probably saw frontline service and as a Schutzpolizei officer was probably involved in anti-partisan operations. The 107 the historian refers to is the number of awards made of the Knight's Cross of the KVK without Swords.

It is a reasonably rare award, but it is a neck order and he is not wearing it. His ribbon bar is just a mix of service awards from WW I and a Nazi faithful service award (blue ribbons), nothing of significance though.
