This is a parts helmet, thus the low price. He said a friend of his removed it because he didn't like the way it looked, so he added it to this M40 shell.
In addition, it had only felt on the liner band, so I bought an original late war liner and put the leather on the existing liner band. The strap is a nice original with painted steel buckle, marked (but I can't read it), and sound for an old chinstrap. The liner leather is a multi-piece model. One of the pieces is dated 1943 and bears an RbNr. The shell is a Q66, heavy, with the Q mark on the rear of the skirt (which indicates a later war shell I believe).
I can't make out the steel lot number because the wire is attached over top of it, and the name painted in the rear covers it. No dents, and the wire has been on the shell so long a dust pattern corresponding to the wire has formed. I didn't pay any premium for the wire, so I trust the guy that it is right.
